The life of a 23-year-old man who slit his wrists at his rented flat near Goregoan was saved on Saturday after police responded to a rescue call from his father in Uttar Pradesh. Vikrant, who stayed alone in a flat in Vanrai Colony, had moved to Mumbai a month back to try his luck in films.
The Vanrai police received a call on their landline number at 3:20 a.m. on Saturday from Piyush Dubey (55). He told Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Indrajit Patil, the duty officer at the time, that his son had just called from Mumbai and said he was going to kill himself. Mr. Dubey had contacted Vikrant’s neighbour in Vanrai Colony, but he said Vikrant’s door was shut from inside and he was not responding to calls. Mr. Dubey then sourced the landline number of the Vanrai police station from the Internet.
Senior Police Inspector Jyotsna Rasam said, “PSI Mr. Patil immediately contacted PSI Maitranand Khandare and PSI Kishore More, who were patrolling the area, and asked them to head to Vikrant’s flat. Mr. Khandare and Mr. More broke open the door of the flat when Vikrant failed to answer the doorbell. They found the bathroom door locked from inside, and broke it open. Vikrant was found lying unconscious on the floor. He had slit both his wrists using a razor blade.”
Ms. Rasam said, “The officers rused Vikrant to the Trauma Care Municipal Hospital in Jogeshwari. He is now being treated for his injuries. Doctors at the hospital have said that Vikrant wouldn’t have survived if he had been brought in five minutes late. He is now out of danger, but is unable to talk. We are yet to find out the reason why he took the extreme step.”
