Attack those who caused you distress, Raj tells farmers

In his first election rally in Vidarbha’s Yavatmal district, infamous for a large number of farmers’ suicides, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray asked peasants to attack those responsible for their distress instead of committing suicide.

“Rather than killing yourself, attack those who are responsible for your condition. Those who committed atrocities against you, those responsible for such crime, attack them and then commit suicide if you want,” he said on Tuesday.

“Suicide can never be the solution to your problem,” Mr. Thackeray said while campaigning for his party’s candidate from Yavatmal-Washim constituency.

Mr. Thackeray also attacked the Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra for neglecting pending farmers’ issues in the state. “It is really sad that the only thing for which this district is known for is farmers’ suicides,” said Mr. Thackeray.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said that the Congress party is examining the speech of Mr. Thackeray. “Any decision on whether to file a complaint with the Election Commission or not will be taken only after going through his entire speech,” Mr. Chavan said.
