Navi Mumbai: An outing for two families ended up in a tragedy on Monday after two members drowned in a river near Gadeshwar dam at Panvel.

The Chamur and Khadu families from Khar had come to the farm house of their relative on Sunday evening.

Of a total of seven people, three stayed in the farm house, while the four decided to take a swim in the Shivansai river.

Seeing Deepak Mohan Khadu (12) drown, his maternal uncle Kishore Motiram Chamur (50), who was also in the water, swam towards Deepak to save him. Eventually, they both drowned.

“During the monsoon, it is better to avoid swimming. Both the victims were new to the river and could not judge the depth and the current. A case of accidental death has been registered,” said senior inspector Maloji Shinde from Panvel taluka police station. Locals fished out the bodies.
