The D.N. Nagar police has arrested a man for extorting money from errant motorists by claiming to be a traffic police constable.
The accused, identified as Mohsin Wazir Sayyed, was caught after a driver who was intercepted by accused on Thursday suspected foul play and alerted the police.
Sayyed flagged down the vehicle at the JVPD signal and accused the driver, a resident of Juhu, of crossing lanes. Sayyed asked the driver to produce his driving licence and pay a fine of ₹300. When Sayyed took out his slip book to issue a challan, the driver said he did not have any cash and would pay through e-challan. Sayyed then told him that the e-challan machines of the entire Juhu and Bandra divisions were faulty. Sayyed then settled for a fine of ₹100.
The driver then noticed that the e-challan machines with constables at the next junction was working. He approached the traffic police constable and asked him if the machines were working. When the constable confirmed it, the driver told him about his encounter.
The constable traced Sayyed and then returned with a team of policemen from the DN Nagar police station. They detained Sayyed and arrested him after he confessed his crime.
The DN Nagar police said Sayyed had been posing as a traffic constable for the past three months.
A police officer said, “Sayyed arrived at spots with traffic jams and fine motorists. He would demand bribes ranging from ₹100 to ₹300 as bribe for them to be left of without being issued a challan.”
