Mumbai: Police are investigating the death of a youth in Goregaon (East), who was found dead in Royal Palms, Aarey Colony on Wednesday morning. He has been identified as Atharva Shinde, 20, whose father Narendra Shinde is a Senior Police Inspector with the Mumbai Police Economic Offences Wing. The autopsy report has pointed to injuries due to physical assault.

The victim’s family resides in Thakur Complex, Kandivli, police said. Family members said Atharva had gone to Royal Palms to attend a party on Monday evening, and was supposed to return home by Tuesday morning. When he didn’t do so till late on Tuesday, they started looking for him.

DCP (Zone XII) Vinay Kumar Rathod said, “We recovered the body on Wednesday morning and he has been identified as Atharva Shinde. There was no missing person complaint registered in his name.”

Victim left party alone

Police officers said they have obtained CCTV footage of Atharva leaving the party alone. A parent of a youngster who was at the party said, “Atharva was new to the group. Nobody knew him well. He had come to the party with his girlfriend. My child was not in contact with him. Children from different colleges had come to the party, so it was not a close group of friends.”

All those who attended the party have been detained, and are being questioned by the police.

Doctors at Sidharth Municipal General Hospital in Goregaon, where the post-mortem was conducted, said thoracic injury was the cause of death. The report also noted contusions on the deceased’s lungs and ribs, along with severe trauma to the chest region. “Both eyes were blackened, and we also found bleeding in his anal region. It’s a clear cut case of assault,” doctors said.

They added that bleeding in the anal region raises suspicion of a possible sexual assault, but declined to comment further. The viscera has been sent to the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories in Kalina for chemical analysis.
