On Saturday, ‘ Tere bina ’, a love song from the upcoming film, Shorgul, was launched, marking Congress leader Kapil Sibal’s Bollywood debut as a lyricist.
The music video’s launch at Sunny Super Sound Studio, Juhu, also saw noted sitar player Niladri Kumar’s debut as a music director. Sibal has written the lyrics of ‘ Tere bina ’, and another song for the film, to which Kumar has composed the music. The music video features Turkish model Suha Gezen, the film’s female lead.
With Uttar Pradesh as its backdrop, Shorgul , produced by 24 FPS Films, is a political drama with a love story at its centre. The film questions society’s stance on issues like intolerance, injustice, corruption and inequality. Co-directed by Jitendra Tiwari and P. Singh, the film features actor Jimmy Shergill as the male lead. Among the other actors are Ashutosh Rana, Hiten Tejwani, Sanjay Suri and Eijaz Khan.
Journey so far
Kumar commented on his journey so far, from a struggling musician, to music director. “I started my career as a young artiste at this very studio, and I remember not even being allowed to enter the monitor room at the time, due to the existing hierarchy,” he says. “From that, to directing music in Bollywood, is a great feeling. To add to that honour is to have Kapil Sibal write the lyrics for my song.”
For his part, Sibal categorically stated that he doesn’t write poetry or lyrics for money; rather, he does it for passion. “I have been writing poetry for a long time now. I started writing in my school days,” Sibal says. “I have previously [released] an album with A.R. Rahman called Raunaq , and it is wonderful to now be associated with another talented musician.”
Sibal appeared less enthusiastic about his other song in the film, which happens to be an item number.
He said, “I don’t wish to speak much about it. You will get to hear it once it’s released. I’m sure you will see it’s not the kind of item number you imagine.”
In the next few days, other songs from the film are expected to release.
Shorgul hits theatres on June 24.
