Documentary screening: 18 Feet

April 22, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 10:24 am IST

The film centres on Karinthalakoottam, a popular folk music band from Kerala’s Thrissur district, and their powerful stories of undergoing caste atrocity and oppression. As the film’s name suggests, 18 feet was the distance Dalits were ordered to keep from ‘upper caste’ people, to ensure ‘purity’. The film details untouchability, and collective memory of the community. As the band plays on, the film spreads a message of equality, love and harmony for all. The film, directed and edited by Renjith Kuzhur, has won the prize for Best Editing at Mumbai International Film Festival 2016. This is a free screening.
