Rocket League is about a future where sport has evolved into a mashup of football and high-powered car.

We all love complex role-playing games with epic stories. They are engaging and with tonnes of guns and playing styles. Some of the best in the genre have been a simple core: they help you relax and focus your brain into one pattern. Rocket League is in that elite club.

What is it about?

A sequel to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars , Rocket League is about a future where sport has evolved into a mashup of football and high-powered cars. Throw in competitive multiplayer team-based action, booster-powered cars and a physics engine and you have the recipe for dumb, beer-chugging fun.

How does it play?

Rocket League lets you get behind the wheel of a small rocket-powered car and zoom across a football pitch dribbling a ball larger than your car towards the goal. You gain boosts and power-ups as you hit the ball or steer towards it.

There are no rules here. Dodge and spin your car to manoeuvre the ball and decimate opponents by ramming into them to buy yourself a few seconds to surge ahead before they respawn and come after you. In sum, the game is that love child of free-for-all destruction derby and football you have been waiting for.

The game crosses every check box. The matches are short and scoring is based on goals scored and saves made. In single-player mode, you can play against computer-controlled opponents. It helps hone your skills before you jump into the competitive multiplayer mode.

As you progress in the game, you get to unlock cosmetic upgrades for your car. The designs with its futuristic renditions of 4x4 trucks will bring back memories of the classic Rock n’ Roll Racing . There isn’t much variety, but the game can be customised in up to one billion ways.

Rocket League is like playing a game of FIFA that has been injected with a dose of TheFast and the Furious . If you are a rookie, the game has a rank system that pits you against similarly skilled players. It allows you to play single to four player modes on each team. So if you have four friends over, you can compete on a split-screen. It is the slick presentation and a superb physics engine that really ensure a great experience. The superior graphics and cool RC Car-like style lend it the flash and show of a grand futuristic game.

Should you get it?

If you love playing football and are looking for something unique, then grab hold of Rocket League. It is whirling dervish combination of destruction derby, football and fun physics game play. A truly addictive experience.
