Unit IX of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch has arrested two accused who allegedly attacked people by accusing them of harassing their fictitious friend’s wife and use the excuse to rob them of their valuables.

According to Crime Branch officials, the arrested accused have been identified as Kiran Shah and Kamalesh Chautai. The police said that the accused have several cases registered against them in various police stations in the city.

The police said that the accused would stop people on busy streets and loudly ask them, “ Sultan ki biwi ko kyon chheda [Why did you tease Sultan’s wife]?”, giving the impression that the targets were guilty of harassing a woman. They would then proceed to assault their targets and make away with whatever valuables the targets would be carrying on their person at the time.

“The accused have confessed to have committed similar crimes in various locations in the city. We have solved six cases and have recovered gold jewellery worth ₹1.5 lakh from their possession,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection I) Nisar Tamboli said.

The Crime Branch suspects the duo of having committed offences in the jurisdiction of police stations such as Parksite, Dadar, Powai, Borivali, Vanrai, Malad, Vakola and Mulund and these police stations are likely to seek custody of the accused.
