urgaon-based gangster Sandeep Gadoli, who had 36 cases of murder, attempt to murder, and extortion registered against him, was killed in a police encounter on Sunday morning in Mumbai. The government had announced a reward of Rs 1.25 lakh for information that would lead to his arrest.

“The firing incident was reported around 11 am on Sunday in the MIDC Police Station area,” said Vinayak Deshmukh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone X. A Gurgaon Police Crime Branch team had arrived in search of an accused in a murder case. He was reportedly residing in a hotel in Andheri East. “When the police team entered his room, they were attacked by Gadoli and his gang members. The two sides exchanged fire,” Deshmukh said, adding, “Two policemen were injured during the gun battle.” Gadoli had two gang members — Manish Khurana and Deepak — with him in the room. Both escaped the gun battle, but were later arrested by the police.

Gadoli was seriously injured in the firing, police said. He was taken to a public hospital where he was declared dead at around 12.55 pm. The injured policemen are being treated for wounds sustained in the encounter.

Gadoli was wanted man since 1999, a police officer said. “His first case was a robbery. Since then he ran a gang of his own with over one dozen members in Gurgaon and the neighbouring areas.” The police was on a lookout for him for the last two years.

According to Gurgaon Police, Gadoli was involved in at least 12 cases of murder and ran a successful extortion racket that targeted local businessmen.
