Mumbai: The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) have called for a State-wide strike on Friday in protest against the attack on a resident doctor in Dhule Civil Hospital.

A massive rally has also been planned on the same day at Azad Maidan by MARD and members of the Indian Medical Association.

Dr. Sagar Mundhada, president of the IMA youth wing, said, “We plan to walk to the Assembly and express our protest against the attack. We are hoping that more than 500 doctors will get together for the rally.”

Dr. Rohan Mhamunkar, who was beaten up by a mob at the Dhule Hospital, got admitted at the Jupiter Hospital in Thane. He was kept in the Intensive Care Unit. A statement issued by the Jupiter Hospital said, “The doctor has requested us not to disclose any details.”

Dr. Mhamunkar was scheduled for a meeting with ophthalmologist and dean of J.J. Hospital Dr. TP Lahane on Wednesday but he did not turn up. He has suffered an orbital fracture and he suffers from a temporary vision loss. Doctors said such an injury to the optic nerve may result in permanent vision loss.

In a meeting to discuss the attack and lack of security at government run hospitals, the State officials decided that the number of relatives accompanying patients will be restricted soon. According to a High Court order, only two relatives are allowed with a patient, but the order is not properly implemented.
