Cyber laws soon to be amended

Mumbai: The government on Tuesday said it will soon propose an amendment to the existing laws to curb cyber crimes. His response came after the Opposition alleged that Maharashtra is turning into a hub of cyber crimes.

Home Minister Ranjit Patil admitted during the Question Hour that a large number of ATM pins are being leaked from the e-wallet of consumers.

The debate was initiated by senior BJP leader Eknath Rao Khadse, whose call records were leaked by a hacker last year. Mr. Khadse hit out at the government, saying while his case drags on, the hacker has gone scot-free.

The government informed the Assembly that about 8,108 cases of cyber crimes have been reported since 2014 and accused have been arrested in 3,736 cases. The House was also told that ₹837 crore has been earmarked for a cyber emergency response team (CERT) on the lines of the national CERT.

“The State does not have an Act of its own and depends on the Central laws. The training for officials in cyber security has been of poor quality,” said Mr. Khadse. The State has already appointed a consortium of M/s C-DAC and Railtel Corporation of India to set up the CERT.
