Mumbai: The Maharashtra government informed the Bombay High Court on Thursday that custodial deaths have reduced from 18 to 10 during the course of one year.

A Division Bench of Justices V.M. Kanade and P.R. Bora was hearing a criminal public interest litigation filed by India Centre for Human Rights seeking implementation of provisions of Section 1A of Section 176 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.

Assistant public prosecutor Mankhuwar Deshmukh informed the court that custodial deaths have reduced from 18 in 2015 to 10 in 2016. The court said the number has to come down to zero.

Ms. Deshmukh said the State has appointed new forensic medial experts in 26 districts to conduct post morterms after the death.

The matter has been adjourned for four weeks.
