Mumbai: A 22-year-old female constable was found to have committed suicide in her residence in Naigaon on Tuesday afternoon.

The constable, identified as Manju Gaikwad (22), was posted with the Local Arms branch of the Mumbai Police, and used to stay with her parents and two sisters in the police quarters.

“At around 12:45 p.m., Manju’s elder sister and brother-in-law reached her house and found that she had committed suicide. She was taken to KEM Hospital where she was declared dead before admission,” said an officer with the Bhoiwada police.

Manju’s family informed the police and a team was sent to her residence.

No suicide note was found and statements of Manju’s sisters and parents will be recorded after her last rites are complete. The police will also be going through the content of her cell phone and her social media accounts.

“Manju’s family members have told us that she had been behaving normally since Tuesday morning, and there was nothing in her behaviour to indicate that she might be contemplating the extreme step. We are also making inquiries with her colleagues to find out if she had confided in them about any problems,” the officer said. Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Deepak Deoraj said that an accidental death report has been filed.
