The Mumbai police and Railway police rescued a 22-year-old man who tried to commit suicide at Khar railway station late on Thursday night.

According to police officials, the Mumbai Police Control room received a call from commuters at the Harbour line platform of Khar railway station at 11:37 pm on Thursday. They said they had stopped a man from jumping in front of a train.

The information was relayed to the Khar police station, and a patrolling unit was sent to the spot. The police took the youth, identified as Rupesh Singh, and made inquiries. He said he was facing problems at home and was under tremendous stress.

The Khar police then contacted the Bandra railway police, under whose jurisdiction the Khar railway station falls, and officers from both the police stations counselled the youth for over an hour. “We spoke to Singh about the crushing effect a suicide can have on his family members and offered to help him with counselling. We contacted his parents who were trying to reach him. They sent his cousin, Rampal Singh (24), to the Khar station,” said an officer with the Khar police.
