Mumbai: Demanding suspension of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-supported independent MLC, Prashant Paricharak, for making derogatory comments about wives of the Army personnel, the opposition on Monday said it will not allow the council to function until Mr. Paricharak is suspended.

“Derogatory comments made by the BJP MLC has hurt the feelings of the members of society. His statements are extremely disgusting and infuriating, for which he has to be punished. We seek suspension of Mr. Paricharak and until the decision is made, we will not let the house function,” said Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde.

Council chairman Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar said the matter is serious, which needs to be discussed in detail.

A meeting of leaders of all the parties will be held on Tuesday to discuss the issue following which the final decision will be taken.

Civic campaigning

Two weeks ago, while campaigning for the civic polls, Mr. Paricharak, at a public rally, had said, “A soldier gets a telegram from his wife that she has delivered a baby. As he distributes sweets to his colleagues on the border, his colleagues ask him the reason. He happily tells that his wife has given birth to a baby boy...but he has not visited home for the whole year. This is the level of politics we have stooped to.”
