In a relief to conservancy workers who were terminated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) following spelling errors in their names, the Chief Minister on Tuesday directed the municipal commissioner to grant them permanency in three months.

The workers will have to submit an undertaking about the spelling error, following which they will be given jobs. The move will benefit 1,400 workers.

The Kachra Vahtuk Shramik Sangh has been representing 2,700 conservancy workers for almost a decade, demanding they be taken on BMC’s payroll. The civic body will now give priority to those taken on board and terminated immediately. Meanwhile, the scrutiny of 1,100 names is under way.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Vishwas Shankarwar said, “We will be displaying a notice with all the names for a stipulated period on a public platform and invite suggestions and objections from people. If someone wants to claim the post, they can come forth. Besides, we have asked them for an undertaking.”

KVSS office-bearers met workers at Azad Maidan to convey the development to them. “We are satisfied. There has been no claim of impersonation so far,” said Milind Ranade, general secretary, KVSS.

The Chief Minister’s office tweeted: “Big relief to 2700 contractual sanitation workers of BMC by CM @Dev_Fadnavis ! CM directs BMC Commissioner to complete the process of making them permanent in service within 3 months in a meeting at Mantralaya.”
