The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday registered an offence against two high ranking officials of a Jalgaon bank for alleged financial malpractices.

According to CBI sources, the two accused, who are yet to be arrested, have been identified as Managing Director Jitendra Deshmukh of the Jalgaon Central Cooperative Bank and D B Patil, manager of the bank's Chopda branch.

“We had received information that after the centre’s move to demonetise ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes, Deshmukh exchanged his old demonetised currency, worth approximately ₹73.42 lakh in all, with ₹100 notes from the collections of the Chopda branch of the bank. Patil, in his capacity as the branch manager and cashier of the bank, helped Deshmukh by making forged entries in the accounts books of the branch to cover up the offence,” said a CBI official.

After completing preliminary inquiries against Deshmukh and Patil, the CBI on Wednesday registered a case against them under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption act.

“We have conducted searches at the offices and residences of both the accused, and have seized several incriminating documents, including the books of accounts of the Chopda branch of the bank. These are currently being examined and the accused are being questioned. The possibility of other officials of the bank being involved can not be denied at the moment and is being verified,” the officer added.
