Bombay HC extends interim relief for ex-editor of Urdu daily

Shirin Dalvi had reproduced a cartoon by Charlie Hebdo

April 17, 2015 03:06 am | Updated 03:06 am IST - Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court on Thursday extended till June 15 the interim relief granted to Shirin Dalvi, former editor of Urdu newspaper Awadhnama .

Faced with criminal proceedings and public backlash over reproducing the cartoon by French weekly Charlie Hebdo in her daily, Ms. Dalvi had moved the court in February seeking protection from coercive action against her.

The High Court had then restricted the Maharashtra police from taking any such action against her.

The court had earlier granted her prayer of clubbing all the FIRs against her registered in various police stations.

The State government has handed the investigation of the case to the Criminal Investigation Department.

Ms. Dalvi has been booked under 295A of the Indian Penal Code, pertaining to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
