The Crime Branch of the Government Railway Police has arrested a Titwala resident for making a hoax call under the influence of alcohol about a explosives being planted on an outstation train.

According to GRP officials, the Railway Protection Force helpline number — 182 — received a call at around 10.30 p.m. on October 11. The caller said that a bomb had been planted on the Chennai Express. The information was forwarded to the GRP and the train, which was approaching Kalyan railway station at the time, was stopped and a thorough search was conducted for two hours. The train was allowed to depart on the train after no suspicious objects were found.

The Crime Branch secured the registration details of the mobile number from which the call had been made. They found that the number was registered in the name of Ajay Chaubey, a resident of Thane (West).

The police team reached the address and found that the house was occupied by Suhas Deshmukh, a businessman who runs a carpet store in Thane.

Police Inspector S. Dhanwate, GRP Crime Branch, said: “Deshmukh told us that Chaubey worked in his store. He let Chaubey use his documents as address proof as he did not have the requisite papers to obtain a SIM card.”

Mr. Deshmukh offered to help the police nab Chaubey and and convinced him to visit the GRP office in Dadar on October 12. Mr Dhanwate said, “We questioned Chaubey and he admitted that he made the hoax call under the influence of alcohol. The reason why he named that specific train is not yet clear.”

Chaubey was placed under arrest and handed over to the Kalyan GRP for further inquiries.
