Big boy rescue

We kick-start our new column on animal adoptions with the heartwarming story of Subbu

April 23, 2018 12:47 am | Updated 04:36 pm IST - Mumbai

Subbu, an orange tabby cat, was found wandering on the street with a wound. Nursed back lovingly to good health by his foster mums, he recovered from the painful abscess and then it was time to find him a home. But finding a home for Subbu proved a huge challenge, despite his gentle temperament as his age went against him. No one really wanted to adopt a two-year-old cat even though Subbu was a kitten at heart!

Then after months of posting messages on email lists and Facebook groups, a miracle took place. Khadija (last name withheld on request) called after seeing an adoption post on Facebook. “I’ve always wanted an adult cat”, she said over the phone. Sweeter words were never heard by Subbu’s foster family. After the mandatory inspection to check out his new home, which passed with flying colours (the balcony was netted, there were plants and they had no problem with cats snoozing on the sofa). This was clearly a place that knew how to care for cats.

Subbu couldn’t have asked for more. Of course it wasn’t all rosy – he felt a bit threatened by kitten Chai who was in the house before him and there were a few teething problems. But all this was related to Subbu’s anxiety at being in a new place and Khadija recognised this. She was kind and tolerant and she just kept telling him he was dearly wanted.

Looks like Subbu was paying attention to the love and care because after a month or so he’s completely settled in his new home. Once he gets onto the bed he makes sure he gets his share of the pillow. He lies on sofas with the total abandon that only cats are capable of. And when Chai was unwell it was Subbu who curled around him and reassuringly groomed him. He’s absolutely adored by his new human family and by kitty brother Chai. Subbu is finally home!
