Mumbai: In the wake of last week’s building collapse in Bhiwandi, the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNMC) has initiated a survey to inspect all buildings.
“The survey will cover all five wards and will take about a month to complete,” said Sunil Zalkhe, an official of the BNMC.
The decision for the survey was taken because the building was only eight years old, and collapsed due to the use of sub-standard construction material.
Last year, the civic body cracked down on dangerous buildings following a collapse in Shanti Nagar.
However, since this building was less than 10 years old, it does not come under dangerous buildings.
“The survey will now cover every building in the city,” said a senior BNMC official. The BNMC has also initiated an internal inquiry to investigate if there were any lapses by civic officials. The building is said to have been completely illegal and did not have the requisite permissions. “No officials have been suspended. If any official is found guilty, proceedings will be initiated,” the official said.
On Friday, Tahir Manzil collapsed in the Nayi Basti locality, killing four and injuring nine. The National Disaster Response Force had to be called in for rescue operations, which went to till 5 a.m on Saturday.
Tahir Ansari, owner of the ground-plus-four-storey residential building, was booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. His mother Zaibunissa Ansari (60) was one of the victims, while his wife is among the injured at Thane Civil Hospital.
He was arrested on Saturday after being allowed to complete the last rites of his mother.
