Barely a fortnight after City Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh resigned to join politics, another senior police officer, Prem Jain, has followed suit.
Mr. Jain, a 1981 batch officer, who was due to retire at the end of this month, submitted his resignation to the Home department on Friday. “After putting in 33 years of service, I am quitting the force. I have already put in my papers,” Mr. Jain, who holds the rank of Additional Director-General in charge of anti-naxal operations, told The Hindu .
“I will not contest elections, but will be an active member of a mainstream political party. So far I have not received offers from any political party,” Mr. Jain added.
Sources close to the IPS officer told this reporter that the State Home department was not positively disposed towards his resignation.
“The resignation came as a surprise to the State Home department. On Friday evening, when Mr. Jain met the Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Maharashtra, to offer his resignation letter, he was asked to rethink,” the sources said.
While Mr. Jain officially refrained from naming the party he is likely to join, the sources said it will be the BJP. In 2010, he was investigated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the Mumbai Police for his alleged role in the procurement of bullet-proof jackets.
The agency had given a clean chit to the officer.
