After RAP, Rakhi Sawant joins RPI

June 29, 2014 03:06 am | Updated 03:06 am IST - MUMBAI:

Bollywood actor Rakhi Sawant on Saturday joined the Republican Party of India (RPI), which is led by Rajya Sabha MP Ramdas Athawale.

Prior to the Lok Sabha elections, Ms. Sawant had met the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in New Delhi to extend her support. However, subsequently she formed her own party called Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP) and contested from Mumbai North-West.

Following her defeat in the elections, she dissolved her party. “She will be given the responsibility of party’s women cell,” Mr. Athawale said.

PTI reports:

“Rakhi is a known face in every household. Her popularity will definitely help us in the forthcoming elections.”

Maintaining that her Lok Sabha bid with RAP was a “rehearsal”, Ms. Sawant said: “Forgive me for saying this Athawale ji , but I can definitely become a CM in the future.”
