Navi Mumbai: A 32-year-old man from Panvel consumed poison prior to his arrest in connection with a dowry harassment case. He died two days later on Wednesday.

Dowry harassment

Pretisha (26), wife of Sachin Ashok Chetre, a resident of Krushnavilla Apartment at Sector 4 in Karanjade, had on February 4 filed the complaint with the Panvel city police.

According to the police, Pretisha was assaulted by her husband on January 26 after which she underwent treatment at a hospital till February 3. “After a case was registered against Chetre, we issued him a notice to present himself at the police station, but he did not come. On February 5, his wife and her relatives complained that Chetre had been threatening to commit suicide if the case was not withdrawn. We sent a team and brought him to the police station and arrested him at around 3.11 a.m. on February 6,” said senior inspector Sunil Bajare of Panvel police station.

Medical check-up

Following his arrest, Chetre was taken for a medical check-up to Panvel municipal hospital where he revealed to the doctor that around 11 p.m. on the previous day he had consumed pesticide. “Around four hours had already passed since he consumed the poison, so the doctor gave him preliminary treatment and referred him to MGM Hospital in Kalamboli. But, he and his relatives insisted on getting admitted to Paramount hospital which was nearby; so he was taken there,” said Mr. Bajare.

Chetre died at around 2.30 a.m. on Wednesday. His body has been sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem. Chetre was the driver of a private van that carries school students. Chetre and Pretisha were married for six years and have a son aged three years.
