Indrani Mukerjea, after being charged with the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, informed a special CBI court on Tuesday that she wanted to move a family court to divorce Peter Mukerjea, a former media baron and co-accused in the case.
In the morning session, charges were framed against Indrani, Mr. Mukerjea, and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna by special CBI judge. H.S. Mahajan. The court decided that the trial would begin on February 1. Mr. Mukerjea did not talk to Indrani or greet her in the court.
During the lunch recess, Indrani made an oral plea seeking permission from the special court to move the family court in suburban Bandra to initiate divorce proceedings against Peter.
She also orally informed the judge that she would like to change her will as she desired to donate her share in the family property to charitable organisations. The judge told her that she need not take the special court’s permission to file a divorce case or change her will and was free to take such decisions on her own.
Sheena was murdered on April 24, 2012, and her body burnt and disposed of in a forest in Raigad district the next day. It is the case of the prosecution that Sheena was strangulated by Indrani in a car while Khanna was holding her. Indrani is lodged at the Byculla jail while her second husband Peter is lodged at the Arthur Road Jail. Earlier, Indrani addressed the court and said she had translated around 700 shlokas of the Bhagvad Gita from Sanskrit to English and wanted to publish a book.
She had also told the court that she would donate the proceeds from the sale of the book to women prisoners in Byculla jail abondoned by their families.
