Mumbai: On February 6, Monica Seth, who was travelling from Vashi to CST, found a woman with a one-month-old baby girl. Suspicious of her motives, Ms. Seth got off with them at GTB Nagar and approached the police. The woman and child were then taken into custody. Ms. Seth’s Facebook post on the incident, along with pictures of the baby, has since gone viral.

Post goes viral

Ms. Nath wrote, “I was travelling from Vashi to CST, when I found a woman hiding this kid. I felt suspicious. Maybe she was trying to even throw this baby!! I went and asked her she was not able to answer a thing! Even if it’s a girl or boy or when was the baby born, what was his/her name! (sic)”

Railway Police Commissioner Niket Kaushik said, “The woman was unable to answer questions satisfactorily. We produced her in a juvenile court on Thursday as she could not even tell her age. She has been sent to the juvenile remand home, and medical tests will be conducted to ascertain her age. Meanwhile, the baby has been handed over to an adoption centre. We are conducting inquiries to find out if she is the woman’s daughter.”

The woman has identified herself as Rajnandini, but not given any other details. The police are scanning CCTV cameras along the harbour line to retrace her movements. Ms. Nath’s post, which ends with an appeal to help trace the child’s parents in case she has been kidnapped, was shared 206,931 times as of Thursday night.
