Police say culprit identified, will be nabbed in a day or two

A 67-year-old yoga instructor is battling for life after being seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Govandi on Saturday. The Govandi police said that the culprit has been identified and they are confident of nabbing him by Wednesday.

An FIR has been registered against unknown persons for causing injury owing to rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Licence plate found

At 6.15 a.m. on Saturday, a speeding car rammed into Usha Prabhakaran, a resident of Swastik Park in Chembur, as she was heading to the yoga centre where she takes classes.

She was rushed to Zen Hospital in Govandi by Ashok Kubla, one of her students, who found her lying injured near the divider outside RBI Colony. Mr. Kubla, in a statement that is part of the FIR, said: “I saw a number plate lying on the road close to where I found Ms. Prabhakaran. I picked it up and handed it over to the police.”

Ms. Prabhakaran was later shifted to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra. Doctors said she is unconsicous owing to severe head injuries and other injuries cannot be treated unless she regains consciousness.

Samith, Ms. Prabhakaran’s son, who has started the #helpnabaculprit campaign on social media, said: “The number plate of the accused’s vehicle was handed over to the police.”

Senior Police Inspector Shashikant Mane, Govandi police station, said, “We approached the Regional Transport Office and obtained the details of the vehicle from the licence plate number. We have found out that owner of the vehicle had shifted residences. We secured his new address with the help of residents of the locality and traced him. We then learnt that the owner had sold the car six months ago.”

The police then approached the car agent who facilitated the sale. The new owner of the vehicle is said to be a resident of south Mumbai. The police that there was evidence that the new owner had taken the car out for a drive on Saturday morning. The police are on his trail now.

Mr. Mane said, “Our investigation is on the right track. We have some leads about the driver’s whereabouts. We will nab the accused in a day or two.”
