₹2.26 crore in old currency notes seized, five detained

Thane cops to hand over money, suspects to I-T officials

Mumbai: The Thane Police Crime Branch, over a period of three days, has seized ₹2.26 crore in demonetised currency notes and detained five suspects, who will soon be handed over to the Income Tax department.

Police officials said all the three seizures were made on the basis of tip-offs.

Jambhli Naka

In the first case, the Unit I of the Crime Branch picked up three suspects at Jambhli Naka with ₹46 lakh in ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes on February 25.

The next seizure was made on February 27, when the police detained one suspect with ₹50 lakh in old notes, while in the third instance, two suspects were detained with ₹1.21 crore in old notes on February 28.

“We have contacted the Income Tax department and will be handing over the suspects and the money to IT officials for further inquiries,” said Thane Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh.
