2 dead, 4 injured in Thane house collapse

Rains blamed for incident at Mharal village

Thane: At least two persons were killed and four were injured when a house collapsed in a village in Thane district following heavy rains early on Sunday.

The house, located on a hillock at Mharal village in Kalyan tehsil, collapsed around 2.30 a.m. when the region witnessed heavy downpour over the last two days, District Disaster Management Officer Asmita Nikam said. People inside the house as well as a couple sleeping in an adjacent house were trapped under the debris, she said.

A team of fire fighters retrieved two bodies from the debris. They also pulled out two injured persons living in the house and the couple from under the debris, Ms. Nikam said.

The deceased were identified as Saifuddin Khan and Aladdin Shaikh, both aged 45, she said. The four injured persons were admitted to a government hospital in Ulhasnagar, she added.

Boy rescued

Two fire brigade personnels rescued a boy stranded in the swollen Ulhas river in the district amid heavy rain on Saturday night.

The boy, hailing from Mohapada-Erandel village near Badlapur, fell into the water and was swept away. He managed to hold on to a tree branch over three hours, shouting for help. fire department officers said.

Man swept away

A 24-year-old man was swept away in a swollen nullah in the Bhiwandi, civic officials said on Sunday. The incident took place near Kamathghar hen the victim, identified as Happy Kanozia, was returning from work on his motorcycle when he lost control over his bike.
