The State Home Department has approved a proposal to install 1,700 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Navi Mumbai.

A joint survey conducted by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, the City and Industrial Development Corporation and the traffic police has identified 500 locations where the cameras will be installed. The places include schools, gardens, bus depots, traffic junctions and libraries.

Belapur constituency MLA Manda Mhatre, who followed up on the proposal, said: “In many crimes, CCTV camera footage has played a vital role in nabbing the culprits. The cameras also help prevent untoward incidents.”

She said the government would fund 1,500 cameras, which would be installed after inviting tenders.

Ms. Mhatre added, “The remaining 200 will be installed using the MLA fund and work is likely to start next month.” At present, there are 284 CCTV cameras in the city.
