A total of 1,432 combat vests which were part of a consignment of AK-47 rifles have been found faulty, Home Minister Ranjit Patil told the Council on Thursday.

The consignment was part of 5,000 bullet proof jackets purchased by the State government from a private firm recently. The Minister was speaking during a debate on security measures taken following the 26\11 terror attacks called by Congress MLC Ananth Gadgil.

In a separate question raised by the members during the question hour session, the Opposition pointed out that the government hadn’t yet paid six months’ salary to fishermen guarding the coastline. Around 600 fishermen guard 91 sensitive points of the 525 potential landing spots.

MLC Jayant Patil said, “This has been a poor fishing season and on top of that, the government has not paid them salaries for the past six months. What kind of security measures are these? Have we not learnt our lessons?” Minister of State for Animal Husbandry Arjun Khotkar said the fishermen would soon be given a pay hike.
