An elephant herd, from the Karnataka forests, destroyed several areca nut trees in the northeastern border hamlet of Kanathur on Tuesday.

This is the latest in the many cases of intrusion of wild elephants into human settlements that triggered panic among farmers and residents.

This time, the herd targeted the farm of Raghavan. The elephant herd, which was probably in search of fodder and drinking water, wreaked havoc and destroyed quite a few areca nut trees in the Moodenveetil locality, driving the locals to spent sleepless nights. Just a day before, they had gone through a similar incident. The terrified locals were seen bursting crackers late into night to force the elephant herd back to the forest.

As the farmers remain helpless in the face of such incidents, the Forest department has begun steps to counter the menace by floating tenders to erect solar fencing wall along the vulnerable pockets.
