Ammu the Hornbill, the mascot of the 35 National Games, was in the city on Tuesday as part of the promotional activities of the Games.

Ammu was also part of a play ‘India is waiting for the children,’ which was staged at Government Vocation Higher Secondary School for Girls (GVHSSG) at Nadakkavu.

The play, which speaks about the importance of physical training along with studies, tells the story of two friends.

It conveys the message that no gains are good enough if one does not have good health and concludes with the message that youngsters should be instrumental in India’s victories in international competition in the future.

The play was a brainchild of National Games Chief Commissioner and former DGP Jacob Punnoose. It was written and directed by Anil Karet. It was on July 13, 2013, that the mascot of the Games was named ‘Ammu’ by Chief Minister.

In September 2013, Minister for Urban Affairs Manjalamkuzhi Ali flagged off the travelling play, which has been performed in 260 venues. Around 4.5 lakh children and 1.5 lakh adults have watched the play so far. The figure of Ammu has been printed on all textbooks published in 2014-15.

On Wednesday, Ammu will visit GMLP School, Mananchira, at 9 a.m. and JDT Islam Higher Secondary School, Vellimadukunnu, at 2 p.m. On September 25, Ammu will visit St. Michael’s High School, West Hill, at 9 a.m., and Chevayoor Presentation Higher Secondary School at 2 p.m. On September 26, the play will be staged at Malabar Christian College Higher Secondary School at 9 a.m.
