“Writing for children is much more difficult than writing for adults. Only those who can read the the minds of children can come up with good children’s literature,” said writer U.K. Kumaran.

Speaking at the valedictory function of a three-day workshop on children’s literature organised by the Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature (KSICL) in the city on Sunday, Mr. Kumaran said writing for children was a huge responsibility compared to writing for adults. “What you read in your childhood has a great influence on your life,” he observed.

The objective of the workshop was to bring out good works in children’s literature for pre-primary students. Around 50 writers attended the workshop, and their works were read out at the camp.

Inaugurating the workshop on Friday, writer U.A. Khader said the aim of children’s literature should be to invoke one’s sense of history. “Give children stories that provide a good idea of history. It should surpass efforts to pollute history. The present situation is such that children’s imagination is polluted by what they read,” he added.

Participating as the chief guest, Prabhakaran Pazhassi, former director of the State Literacy Mission, spoke about the history of children’s literature.
