Local people blockade the waste treatment plant at Nadapuram on Thursday.

Residents aligned to a local action committee constituted against the functioning of Nadapuram panchayat’s waste treatment plant blocked all the garbage-laden vehicles to the plant on Thursday, saying that no more waste dumping attempts would be encouraged at the site. Many women also joined the stir amid the continuing silence of the panchayat on the issue.

Action committee leaders said the plant was functioning without any sanction from the Pollution Control Board or any other government approved agency. They alleged that the treatment procedure adopted at the plant was unscientific and causing health hazards to locals.

“A couple of days ago, some unknown people set ablaze the plastic waste kept inside the plant, thereby causing pollution in the area. We strongly suspect the involvement of the plant management in the issue,” said a local action committee leader.

He alleged that the panchayat was unyielding to even reasonable demands of local residents and continuing the unscientific garbage treatment process.

Meanwhile, the Nadapuram panchayat authorities said there were no attempts at the plant to treat plastic waste causing health hazards and the management of the plant had no involvement in the burning of the collected stock.

“It was found set ablaze when all the arrangements were in place to send the stock for recycling,” they said.
