VACB registers 2 more cases against Kozhikode Mayor

One case pertains to alleged graft in fixing advertising tax

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) has registered two more cases against Kozhikode Mayor A.K. Premajam, Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef, and 10 others in connection with the allegation of irregularities in the city Corporation.

The First Information Report (FIR) was filed against them by K. Ashraf, Deputy Superintendent of Police, before the Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge here on Wednesday.

The case was registered under Section 13 (1) (c) (d) read with 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) read with Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

M. Bhaskaran, former Mayor; S. Vijayakumar and M. Kunhimohammed, former Corporation secretaries; B.K. Balraj, present secretary; N.V. Mohammed Ali and K. Revathi, former deputy secretaries; K. Praveen Kumar, deputy secretary; M.G. Sasi and N.M. Ramani, former revenue officers; and K. Chandran, former superintendent; are the other accused named in the case.

As of now the VACB has registered 17 cases in connection with the allegations of irregularities in the civic body.

Three cases have been filed against the Mayor, five against the Deputy Mayor, and 14 against the former Mayor. The cases were filed after the VACB carried out an inquiry on the basis of a petition moved by K.P. Vijayakumar, convener of the Anti-Corruption Campaign Committee, in the court. One of the cases pertained to the corruption in fixing the advertisement tax in 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13.
