In a bid to promote employability of students, Vadakara-based Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) has agreed in principle to tie up with the British Council, Cambridge English and British Deputy High Commission to develop centres of excellence in schools in the State.

Rameshan Paleri, chairman, ULCCS, said the new initiative of UL Education would facilitate integrated development and provide world-class facilities in schools in the State. Schools in Madappally in Kozhikode district have been identified for the pilot project.

It will be implemented in the Madappally boys and girls high schools, Higher Secondary School and Vocational Higher Secondary School. The ULCCS would implement twinning programmes with overseas institutions of repute in the State, he said.

The ULCCS, which started as a successful model for labour cooperatives in the construction sector in 1925, has forayed into IT sector by setting up a cyberpark in Kozhikode, and also ventured into tourism and education sectors. “The new initiative is one of the projects in the education sector. Discussion are going on and we hope to ink the agreement by mid-October and kick-start the project by October last, ” T.P. Sethumadhavan, Director, UL Education, said.

Dr. Sethumadhavan, former Director (Entrepreneurship), Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Pookode, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the project was envisaged to bring in quality education in schools in a phased manner. Infrastructure development projects would be implemented in schools with the assistance from district, block and grama panchayats, he added.

A consultative workshop with teachers and PTA of the three schools was held in September. The project would be initially extended in Kozhikode district and then across the State, he said.
