Activists of the United Democratic Front (UDF) on Tuesday staged a sit-in in front of the district collectorate in protest against the “anti-people policies” of the State and Central governments.

Earlier hundreds of workers also took out a march from Eranhipalam Junction to the civil station.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and Indian Union Muslim League leader P.K. Kunhalikutty, who inaugurated the agitation, said the Communist Party of Indian (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front had proved within 100 days of coming to power that its government could not do anything worthwhile for the people, but only indulge in maladministration.

The Left coalition, which rode into power with the slogan ‘LDF Varum Ellam Sariyavum’ (LDF will come, everything will be alright) could not make anything right and would not be able to do so in future. The only thing this government had done was using the police to suppress its political rivals, Mr. Kunhalikutty said.

He accused the government of playing partisan politics at the riot-hit Nadapuram. The police had not been able to arrest the murderers of League worker Mohammed Aslam till now. At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre indulged in crass communalism and casteism instead of solving the problems of the people, he said.

‘Party courts’

Speaking on the occasion, Congress leader M.K. Raghavan, MP, said the CPI(M)’s way of justice was to carry out its own trial in party courts by killing those acquitted by courts.

UDF district chairman P. Sankaran said the face of the CPI(M)-led government in Kerala and the BJP-led government at the Centre was similar.

DCC president K.C. Abu, IUML leader M.K. Muneer, Janata Dal ( United) district president V. Kunhali spoke.
