The ongoing track electrification work in the Shoranur-Mangalore section may be almost complete but the actual commissioning of the work in the Kannur-Mangalore stretch has to wait for nearly two more years.
The work will start only after the traction substations for supply of power are constructed at six locations.
The track electrification work in the Shoranur-Mangalore section is under the Chennai project unit of the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE), Allahabad.
Of the total 215-km track electrification under the Chennai project, the State alone has 178 kms of the track (Shoranur-Mangalore route). Here, the electrification work is nearing completion.
Shoranur-Kozhikode“The electrification work in the section between Shoranur and Kozhikode has already been completed and test charged with 25kV,” said V.K. Manoharan, Deputy Chief Electrical Engineer, Kannur project of the electrification work.
Modification workOnce the work for the modification of an overbridge across the track in Kozhikode is over, the Railway could run the electric train in the Shoranur-Kozhikode stretch.
He also said the electrification work in the section between Kozhikode and Netravati (between Kasaragod and Mangalore) had also been completed. The section was test charged with 2.2 kV system, he said.
The electric train could start running on the track only after the completion of the traction substations. It would take approximately two years for the project unit to complete the substations, he added. The locations identified for building the substations were Tirur, Elathur, Kannur South, Cheruvathur, Uppala and Thokur.
The Chennai project unit of CORE has been chosen as the best among the 10 project units in the country for having completed track electrification of more route kms than other units during 2013-14.
