A unique combination of heritage, tourism, health awareness, and an amazing cuisine — that is the Malabar Tourism Expo and Food Festival that began at Port Grounds on Kozhikode beach on Sunday.

The month-long festival, organised by Rotary Club Calicut Smart City in association with Vanson Shipping Tourism, is part of ‘Dirty Spot-Beauty Spot’, a project for the beautification of the beach.

Accounts of the history and heritage of Kozhikode by noted historians everyday are the highlights of the expo. The sessions will be a journey through the cultural heritage of the city.

The health awareness sessions every evening will be organised under the aegis of the Kozhikode branch of the Indian Medical Association. Noted personalities of the city like the Zamorin, the chief Quasi, and Bishop, besides the best autorickshaw driver, best life guard, best cleaning worker, and best porter will be honoured during the expo.

There will be a session titled ‘Celebrity of the Day’ everyday in which a prominent person from the fields of theatre, music and other art forms will be honoured. Cultural programmes will be held after 9.30 p.m. Competitions for children will be held between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. everyday.

The Food Festival organised as part of the expo features stalls by major hotels in the city, besides Kudumbasree. The festival, open between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., offers the traditional cuisine of Kozhikode.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Mayor Thottathil Raveendran on Sunday. It will conclude on May 16.
