Roonie, a member of the dog squad here, played a vital role in resolving a case in connection with the murder of a 56-year-old homemaker, a day after the crime was committed on Wednesday.

The two-and-a-half-year-old tracker dog, trained at the Thrissur-headquartered Kerala Police Academy, was taken to the Podavadukkam residence of the victim, C. Leela, wife of Ambutty Nair. It was accompanied by two dog squad personnel.

Roonie, a part of the dog squad here for the past 18 months, sniffed around the residential premises of the woman, who was suspected to have been strangulated to death by a migrant worker. The dog rushed to the spot where the police had found the woman’s gold chain, wrapped in a towel.

The following day, the police took Roonie to four labourers they had taken into custody. Roonie jumped all over Abul Shaikh, one of the suspects, driving him to confess to the crime, Jins Joseph, an employee with the dog squad, said.
