The plain cotton saris and dress materials may lack the shine and lustre of silk and synthetic clothes that are mostly in demand during one of the biggest shopping seasons of the region, Ramzan. What they lack in lustre, they make up in design and affordability.
All the pieces at the All India Cotton Fest being organised by entrepreneur Narmada Nangai at the Srishti Art Gallery cost less than Rs.2,000. “This is for the ordinary people like you and me. I have handpicked these designs for their look. From afar, these designs look like thread work and costly.”
She has a few unique pieces up her sleeve like the Bengal silk saris, Batik saris with thread border, Gadwal sarees, super net sarees and hand-printed cotton sarees with a wide range of dress materials in unimaginably rich prints.
The exhibition is supported by Punarjani, a collective of cancer survivors.
It also features a stall for handmade jewellery by Punarjani.
The exhibition that started on Monday will conclude on Sunday.
