Chief Minister Oommen Chandy lauded the efforts of the late Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal in maintaining social amity and communal harmony in the State.

Inaugurating the Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal and Syed Umar Bafaqi Thangal commemoration meet organised by the IUML here on Thursday, Mr. Chandy said that the outlook of these leaders had helped maintain religious tolerance in the State.

Some sections had attempted to foment trouble when the country had been passing through crucial phases, but the foresightedness of leaders such as Shihab Thangal thwarted those moves.

Mr. Chandy also lauded the contribution of Syed Umar Bafaqi Thangal. Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty presided. IUML State president Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal inaugurated a housing scheme for poor families.

Rahmathulla Khasimi Moothedam delivered the memorial speech.
