Rusty weapons found at unoccupied plot
The city police recovered 10 swords from an unoccupied plot at Mathottam, near Marad, on Tuesday morning.
The rusty weapons were recovered after local people spotted a sword without the hilt while clearing the sand for setting up a makeshift market using an earthmover. The remaining swords were dug out later.
Investigators said the swords could have been hidden in the sand more than 10 years ago.
The land, located behind the Mathottam fish market, was in the possession of K. Noushad hailing from Mathottam. He had purchased the plot five years ago. A case was registered at the Beypore police station.
The coastal village in Marad had witnessed a communal clash on January 3 and 4, 2002 and a massacre on May 2, 2003.
Five persons were killed in the communal conflagration and nine fishermen were killed in the 2003 incident. The police had seized a large cache of weapons, including bombs, from various places.
