: The new fish mart (air-conditioned) opened by the Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development (Matsyafed) at Arayidathupalam here to supply fresh fish in hygienic conditions has drawn good response.

The total turnover at this outlet within a month of its launch is around Rs.13.7 lakh, which signals sunny prospects for the maiden venture. Seven tonnes of fish have been sold through the mart.

Profit

“Our profit after meeting operational costs in the last month was close to Rs. 60, 000,” said T.V. Ramesan, manager of Matsyafed. Most of our clients are from middle class and upper middle class families who opt for costlier fish varieties, he added.

The trade of fresh fish in clean surroundings is the biggest attraction for the majority of buyers here. The mart gets fresh catch from a chain of suppliers attached to various harbours in the city. The buyers also get the services of workers here to gut the fish and take it home ready for cooking.

According to Matsyafed officials, with the setting up of a base station at Puthiyappa, the mart would get direct supply of all fish varieties at a very affordable rates.

More jobs

There will be more employment opportunities for women from poor fishermen families, they said.

Matsyafed officials confirmed that they would consider opening two more modern outlets in the city shortly, at Feroke and Cheruvannur.

Upset traders

They said the move would not upset conventional traders in the sector. It was aimed at tapping newer trading opportunities.

Altogether, five marts are on the anvil, which will be realised in a phased manner after getting the required land from the City Corporation.
