The students’ union of the Government Medical College here staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Principal, C. Ravindran, on Tuesday, demanding action against the unit president of the Students Federation of India (SFI), who allegedly led a group of people from outside the campus to assault the college union president and secretary on September 5.

The students, who carried out the demonstration from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., dispersed only after the Principal assured them that he would take a decision after getting a report from the Medical College police, which had registered a case in connection with the incident. The police had intervene to remove the agitated students.

“I have also summoned the parents of the students on Wednesday to talk to them on the issue. Vice-Principal Rema Devi has already given a preliminary report without naming anyone involved in the incident. The SFI unit president, Alex Eldo, had clarified that he had not manhandled the union office-bearers,” Dr. Ravindran said.

Roshan Reji, a representative of the college union, said the chairman, Seuz Samson, and the general secretary, Mohammed Tasleem, both final-year MBBS students, were attacked by an unknown group of people when they were preparing to go home for vacation. One of them had also sustained injuries on the head. Incidentally, the SFI unit president was present at that time, he said.

Dr. Ravindran said the incident had taken place during his absence. “It was ambiguous whether the student had actually a role in the attack on his colleagues. Action can be taken only if the police give an indication,” he said.
