SAVE (Students Army for Vadakara Environment), a forum formed at Vadakara a couple of years ago with the main aim of protecting the environment with the help of students, has come forward to explore what can be done by it to bring peace back to the conflict-torn regions of Thooneri and Nadapuram at Vadakara.
A recent executive meeting of the SAVE has decided to constitute a team of students called Sneha Sena at schools in the region with the special mission of working for communal peace and harmony in the region.
“The schools have been requested to form the Sena, by including teachers, students, parents, and public representatives among others by March 4,” said Vadayakkandy Narayanan, schoolteacher and district coordinator of the forum. The Sena will be divided into different groups of 10 members each to visit their neighbourhood with the message of peace.
Besides listening, interacting and spending time with the members of the houses, these groups would also distribute pamphlets of peace, said Mr. Narayanan.
“The team will find a convenient time, most probably in the evenings and during holidays, for their visit,” he said.
150 schools
The SAVE activists said that there were around 150 schools in the region and all of them had been asked to form the Sena .
A senior public representative from each locality would be the chairman of the forum and the head of the school would be the convenor.
A student would be made the captain of the team.
Each team would visit five to 10 houses during a trip, they said.
The SAVE members will stage a satyagraha for peace at Kodencheri, one of the main centres of unrest in the region, on Wednesday.
This will be to spread awareness of the importance of peace and harmony among the people.
Teachers, religious leaders and public representatives would also participate in the satyagraha, said Mr. Narayanan.
Inaugurated
The formation of Sneha Sena was formally inaugurated by noted Gandhian Thayat Balan during a public function at Kannankai Government LP School, Vadakara, on Saturday.
Socio-cultural activists and leaders from different sections of society were part of the event.
