A collection of short films produced by the Mass Communication and Journalism students of SAFI Institute of Advanced Study (SIAS) at Vazhayur, near Ramanattukara in the district, has caught the attention of viewers and critics alike.

It was released by film-maker P.T. Kunhumuhammed at a function on the college campus a few months ago.

The collection includes seven short films with durations varying from one minute ( Save Energy , directed by Fathima Shiyana) to 17 minutes ( Huda Hafiz by Rajani Bala). Six are directed by girls.

Three of the films, including Maskara by Prajitha Rajendran, has secured awards at different film festivals in the State, said M. Noushad, Head of the Department of Communication and Journalism at the institute.

Cinematography and editing of the films have been done by Lukmanul Hakeem, a production trainee at the institute. “The students themselves have done the rest of the production and post-production work,” said Mr. Noushad.

Sreeja , a music video based on two short poems by T.A. Naseemudhin and directed by A. Shahida, secured the award for the best music video at the recently concluded Youth Spring Short Film Festival organised by the Solidarity Youth Movement while Save Energy was given the best film award by the Confederation of Cable TV Operators.

“Another film has been selected to the Asianet short film festival,” said Mr. Noushad.
