Stir against State’s autonomy moves for private colleges

May 31, 2014 11:59 am | Updated 11:59 am IST - Kozhikode:

A group of Students Federation of India (SFI) activists waylaid the officials of the University Grants Commission (UGC), who arrived at the St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri, for verification on the college’s application for autonomy, at Medical College here on Friday.

The waylaying was part of the federation’s protest against the State government’s decision to grant autonomy to aided and private colleges in the State, SFI district secretary M.K. Nikesh said. Around 200 student workers of the federation participated in the protest. The officials, who were stopped by the agitators on the way, returned without completing the inspection. “If they come for the verification once again tomorrow we will have no other way but to block them,” said Mr. Nikesh.
